The Pope Greyhound JV scored 11 runs in the first three innings and coasted to a 12-5 opening game victory against the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets at chilly Sprayberry High School. Sophomore righthander Cooper Orr (1-0) pitched the first three innings to earn the win. Orr used an effective curve ball to strike out eight, allowed just one hit, walked one, and faced only 11 hitters. Orr led the Hounds hitters with two hits, including a double and two runs scored. Pope had five hits on the day and Sprayberry committed five errors.
Pope broke open the game in the top of the third inning. Orr led off and reached base by an error. Logan Rapp, Blythe Keisler, and Jesse Walter were all hit by two-strikes pitches. Walters at bat scored Gabe Sanford from third, who pinch ran for Orr. Mason Glennon grounded out and scored Rapp. Lead-off hitter Calvin Koo hit a first-pitch line drive over the center fielder for a triple to score Keisler and Griffin Tamucci, who pinch ran for Walter. Jack Myers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Koo and complete the big inning for the Hounds.
Pope pitchers combined for 12 strike outs, allowed just five hits, and walked three. Drew Sisco pitched a scoreless fourth and struck out one. Carter Joachim pitched the final two innings and allowed no runs and struck out two.
After falling behind 1-0 after one inning, Pope scored five runs in the top of the second to quickly retake the lead. Pope’s final run came in the top of the seventh when Jake Gastley led off with a double to left-center field. Ryan Anthony walked on a full count. Tamucci ran for Gastley and scored from third base on a passed ball.
