Message from the Athletic Director

Pope Greyhound Fans,

We welcome you to the Greyhound Nation.  Whether you are a student-athlete, parent, staff member, community supporter, or potential Pope Greyhound family, we are excited to have your attention to our athletic programs.  Thank you for your support as a part of the Pope Family.

We believe athletics is a key ingredient in the recipe for a successful high school career.  Here at Pope we combine education-based athletics that focuses on developing strong-physically and mentally-young adults with championship quality performance on the field and courts.  Our department consists of 15 different GHSA-sponsored sports divided over 23 varsity teams.  The athletic year is divided into three seasons: Fall-Football, Competitive Cheerleading, Volleyball, Softball, Cross Country (boys & girls); Winter-Basketball (boys & girls), Swim/Dive (boys & girls), Wrestling; Spring-Baseball, Track (boys & girls), Lacrosse (boys & girls), Soccer (boys & girls), Golf (boys & girls), Tennis (boys & girls), and Gymnastics.  We welcome you to check these individual sports on their websites.

Pope has seen tremendous success on the athletic fields/courts since its inception in 1987.  Located in the heart of East Cobb, Pope is well-known for its academic prowess, but what sets us apart is the classroom achievements are matched with athletic and extracurricular achievements as well.  Students and coaches who continuously push the standard upward academically also have reached extraordinary heights athletically in the tune approximately 100 region championships, 25 state championships, and in 2013-14, the athletic teams won the GADA Director’s Cup in Class AAAAA, which recognizes the school that sees the most success in the state playoffs stretched across all sports.  We are very proud of the winning traditions that have developed at Pope High School.

Here at Pope, one of our main focuses in continuing the high quality of athletics is to provide our student-athletes with the best facilities.  Our campus consists of an artificial turf stadium field; a natural grass athletic field; a one mile cross country trail around the campus’ perimeter; a running track and field event areas; one of the top ten baseball fields/facilities in the state of Georgia; four tennis courts; a newly renovated softball field; a fully equipped weight room; two gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling matches; as well as , a spacious wrestling room for daily practice and skill building.  We are fortunate to have strong relationships with a local pool, golf course, and gym for quality practice and competitions for our swim, golf, and gymnastic teams.  In an effort to constantly improve and upgrade our facilities, we will be adding a new state-of-the-art gymnasium that will be outfitted among many other things new basketball and outdoor sport locker rooms.  Along these same lines, in recent years, we have focused on upgrading our sports medicine program including a training room that is well stocked with injury and rehab supplies, which is supervised by two certified athletic trainers, who work full-time with Pope in a relationship we have with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  We are truly blessed to have such outstanding facilities here at Pope and look staying among the leading schools with the best facilities in our state.

Pope High School is a very well-rounded academic institution and included in that is our promotion of sportsmanship.  We encourage everyone to cheer for and support the Greyhounds while respecting the athletes of both teams, the officials, the coaches, and the facilities.  Our attention to sportsmanship has led to Pope being awarded the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award multiple times since the 2009-10 season.  We request that you please help us continue our demonstration of showing good sportsmanship at all Pope athletic events.

Everyone here at Pope High School understands that success is not the results of the efforts of just one person rather it takes a community to raise quality, contributing young adults.  That goes for the academic environment as well as athletics and fine arts.  On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, staff members, and the athletic department, I, as athletic director, want to say a huge THANK YOU for the role you play in the POPE NATION.  Our success is directly connected to efforts every Greyhound puts forth and we hope to make you proud to be involved with Pope Athletics.

Go Greyhounds….. #PopeNation
