Pope Boys Varsity Soccer Defeats Dunwoody 2-1

The Pope High School Greyhounds struck first against the Dunwoody High School Wildcats on a soggy field in Tuesday night’s contest. In the 9th minute Pope midfielder Omar Nabilsi collected the ball at the top of the box and, after dancing past four Dunwoody defenders, fired sharply past the Wildcat keeper to put Pope up 1-0. A majority of the first half action would take place in the Dunwoody side of the field, but the teams would head into halftime with Pope leading 1-0.

Coming out of halftime, Dunwoody threw numbers forward playing five up front, but stout Pope defending by Joey Parker, Kyle Xhajanka, Henry Purdy, Tyler James, and Mark Piendel denied service to the five Wildcat forwards. The Greyhounds would score next as forward John Luttrell was judged by the referee to have been taken down in the box by a sliding Dunwoody defender. Captain Henry Purdy calmly stepped up to the mud slick penalty spot and blasted the ball into the lower left corner to give Pope a two goal lead. Dunwoody continued to press for an opening and struck the crossbar twice within a minute’s time. Dunwoody broke through with a goal with six minutes left in the contest leading to some final nervy moments including two bicycle kick attempts in the box by Dunwoody in the final minute.

Next Up: Friday April 21 at home versus Johns Creek (conference match)
