Press Release-Jeff White HVC 2020

Pope names, Dr. Jeff White, new Head Volleyball Coach

Marietta, GA—Pope High School found itself in need of a new varsity head volleyball coach just before the Covid19 quarantine period began in mid-March.  During this time out-of-school the administration collected resumes for interested parties and have now landed on its next head volleyball coach.  Dr. Jeff White will take the reins of the volleyball program starting in the fall of 2020.  Coach White comes from his most recent position as head volleyball coach and teacher at Jackson County Comprehensive High School in Jefferson, Georgia.

Jeff White has a long history of success while leading volleyball programs at the high school and college level.   He moved to Georgia in 1997 to take over the program at Chattahoochee High School in Johns Creek, where he had a record of 135-59 in four seasons, which included a trip to the Final Four in 2000 and a State Runner-up finish in 2001.  He was named GA High School Volleyball State Coach of the Year in 2001.  From there, he moved just up the road to Northview High School, where he led the Titans to three State Championships (2005, 2007, 2008).  And again, in 2005 & 2008, Coach White was named GA High School Volleyball State Coach of the Year. In 2012, Coach White felt the urge to move up to the college level.  He was named the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia for 2012-13.  His team at Brenau went 37-29 in his only season in Gainesville.  From Brenau, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama to lead the volleyball program at Birmingham-Southern College.  In three seasons there, he amassed a record of 71-25 culminating in a top 25 ranking in 2015.  Then, in 2017, Jeff decided to take an assistant coaching position at the Division 1 program in Birmingham, the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB).  After his only season at UAB, Coach White moved back to Georgia and took over the program at JCCHS in the fall of 2018.  His two-year record at Jackson County was 61-28.  His 2018 squad made the state quarterfinals, and his 2019 team set the school record with wins in a season making a run to the Final Four.  He was named Athens Banner-Herald Coach of the Year in 2018.

“When we found ourselves in need of a new head volleyball coach, Coach White’s name was sent to us pretty early in the process.  As a matter of fact, the referral came with a note that Coach White was ‘the best volleyball coach in the state.’  Although Covid19 caused us to prolong our normal interviewing and hiring process, we were able to spend time with the candidates in a couple of different zoom settings, and we eventually learned that Coach White was the right choice for Pope.  We are excited to have him as our next head volleyball coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the sport, success at both the high school and college level, strong ties in the club volleyball scene, but most of all, we learned that Coach White is a man of integrity and character that matches the high moral fiber of other coaches on our Pope Athletic staff.  We believe that he and his wife, Stephanie, who is a former Pope student herself, will be another tremendous addition to our Pope Family,” stated Josh Mathews, Pope Athletic Director.

Jeff White is not only a superb volleyball coach; he is esteemed in the classroom as well.  He received his B.A. in physical education from Cal State-Northridge in 1992, followed by a master’s in arts in Health Studies from the University of Alabama in 2003.  Then, in 2014, Dr. White completed his Ph.D. in Sport Pedagogy from the University of Georgia.  He will join the Mathematics Department at Pope High School.

Coach White takes over a volleyball program at Pope that has been a state power over the past fifteen years.  During that time, the Greyhounds have won eight (8) region championships, reached the semi-finals four (4) times, finished state runner-up in 2008 (Pope lost to Coach White’s Northview team), and won four (4) state championships, most recently in 2018.  “We believe he will lead our program on the same trajectory that has been established over the past 15 years, while challenging our young ladies to reach the same level of success in life as they achieve on the volleyball court,” stated Mathews.

Coach White spent many years before his college coaching days coaching in the club volleyball scene around Atlanta.  He has coached as a part of the programs with the Atlanta Juniors, A5, and GA5.  His career record is 407-185 at the high school level and 109-52 at the college level.

Coach Jeff White is married to his wife, Stephanie, a 1990 Pope High School graduate.
