On Friday, February 17, Pope’s Varsity Gymnastics team soared to the top of the competition beating county rivals Walton and Lassiter. This meet at North Metro gym hosted all Cobb County high school gymnastics teams; other schools in attendance were Wheeler and Harrison. In addition to winning 1st place, this meet was especially exciting for two reasons. Not only did we have the largest crowd of Pope students, teachers, and parents cheering the team on than we’ve ever had before, but also Pope scored over 100 points, a victory that had less than a 2 point margin from second and third place teams. A team score of 100 points or greater is required twice throughout the season in order for the team to qualify for State Prelims in April. After this meet, the Gym Hounds are halfway there to taking their competition to state playoffs.
All four events had a higher event total than the team’s opening meet, showing immediate improvements from the Gym Hounds. Vault totaled 24.65 points, Bars 25.1 points, Beam 25.5 points, and Floor 25.4 point. A celebration is always called upon when the highest event total is from Beam! Pope’s individual scores ranged from 7.7 to 9.0, a HUGE increase from the last meet.
Freshman Kaitlyn Farley destroyed the All-Around competition with a total of 35.4 points. Junior Lauren Claxton followed closely behind with 33 points, while Senior Emma Hazenberg and Junior Megan Cater ended with 31.7 points.
